Current Fellowship and Care Groups for Adults
Over the Chapel Hill Gang: This group of retired friends from Chapel Hill meets faithfully on the first Wednesday of every month for lunch and fellowship at various Portage area restaurants. All interested adults are welcome. For more information contact Dorothy Harrington at 327-0303.
Baby Boomers and Beyond: We are a group of over-50s who meet bimonthly to socialize. Scheduled activities are game nights, picnics, short trips, etc. Watch for notices about activities in The Voice.
Third Thursdays: Third Thursdays is a fellowship group that meets for lunch to care and share once a month on (get this!) the Third Thursday of each month. We meet at a different restaurant each month. Watch The Voice for the monthly location, or contact Pastor Gini (giniheller@pchum.com) 269-274-9416.
Sewing Group: If you are into crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch—ANY type of hand-sewing, and like to do it with others for fellowship, this is the group for you! We meet at Jean Christie’s home (6108 Cypress) on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month, from 1-4p. All are welcome! Contact Jean Christie for more information (327-2313 or pjchrist@att.net).
Travel and Leisure: This group is open to any and everyone! It is a group for those on the go who appreciate the arts. Typically there is an activity every other month. (We try to stay in the “Zoo” area in the winter months due to weather.) Activities include museums, art shows, the Battle Creek Brass Band, live theatre, and concerts. For more information, watch The Voice, or contact Linda Dunn (lcdunn2000@gmail.com or 492-9798).
Out to the Movies: Join a group for a movie and popcorn! This is a very informal group that meets about once a month to go the movies, and maybe dinner before or after if anyone wants. It’s just a great way to get out of the house with a small group of great people! Contact Amy Helmuth (327-2912 or ajhelmuth@hotmail.com).
MOMS – Moms of Magnificent Spirit!: This small group is geared toward new moms, although moms with experience are welcome too (we need your advice)! Our casual gatherings will offer conversation and fellowship as we explore the joys and challenges of motherhood and pray for God’s guidance in this new adventure! The book, Living on Baby Time, by Susan Besze Wallace will provide us with conversation starters and guiding questions as we discuss life’s new responsibilities. We will listen and learn from one another and develop relationships, all through God’s guidance and love for us mommies! Wednesdays 6:30pm – 8:00pm. Contact Amy Meyer
Adult Recreational Volleyball: Need a little fun, fellowship and exercise? Come to adult recreational volleyball on Monday nights during the school year from 7-9 pm at Portage Central Elementary School on South Westnedge. Contact Shirley Freeman at freemanfam@aol.com.
Senior Ministries: Senior Ministries is a wonderful gift to the church family. This group coordinates meals for people following illness or surgery, transportation, and much-needed assistance in times of trouble. At this time they are also putting a directory together on where seniors can get differing kinds of assistance in the community. They meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7 pm at Bob and Jean Christie’s home (6108 Cypress). For more information, please contact Bob or Jean Christie (327-2313 or pjchrist@att.net).
Men’s Breakfast: This informal group meets on Wednesday at 7 am for breakfast at East Egg. It is a time of food and fellowship. Come join us for this early morning wake-up time!
Tools ‘R Us: Following the Men’s Breakfast, the group often heads out to do repairs for the church or people in the area. Handy? Like to help? Here we are! Contact David Miner (269-352-7339).
Mission Quilting: PCHUM Quilters meet every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 in room 108, beginning September 15. The focus of our evening meetings is making simple quilts that are donated to The Deacon’s Conference, The Gospel Mission, Camp New Day and Bethany Children’s Services. Anyone of any skill level can join in the work and fellowship. If you would like more information please contact Gayle Franklin at 269-372-0916.
Food, Justice, and Community: This will be a great way to meet new people, make a positive impact on our local community and gain some close friends along the way. We will begin by touching on six core subjects: Food Sharing, Nurturing the body, Hunger, Food & Environment, Creating Community and Discerning God’s call. In other words we’ll be covering the health of our bodies, improving the access others have to food, how our food choices influence the health of our earth and the way we can use food to extend hospitality and enrich relationships. There will be lively conversation and food at each meeting so come join us on our journey to positively impact the local community with food and justice. Contact Tim and Sara Kirk
Mission Activities: Chapel Hill also relates to people in the community through a number of mission groups: Romence Food Pantry, Ministry with Community, Martha’s Table, and blood drives, just to name a few. For more information and ways to get connected, please contact Pastor Gini Heller (giniheller@pchum.com or 269-274-9416.)
