IMAGINE YOURSELF… visiting the Faith Village Sunday School (Rms. #100-122) at Chapel Hill. When you arrive, the session has already begun, and you move from room to room. In the first room, children are examining a print of Van Gogh’s Starry Night before they begin a life-size mural illustrating Genesis 15:5-6. They copy Van Gogh’s technique to paint the night sky around a silhouette of Abram.
As you enter the kitchen, some children are assembling a fruit salad while others fry tortillas. They tell you they are making the kinds of foods which might have been served when Abraham held a feast when Isaac was weaned.
Another room is filled with the sound of laughter as children play “the Laughing Game.” When the giggles wind down, the teacher begins a discoussion about laughter and reminds the children how elderly Abraham and Sarah laughed when God told them they would have a baby. They learn the meaning of the name of baby Isaac (laughter).
On your way to another room you see children in white lab coats navigating the halls with compasses. When you ask what they are doing they say they are following an orienteering course to feel what it was like for Abraham & Sarah’s on their journey.
In a final room, you see children working with partners at computer stations as they create a digital image of the land promised to Abraham.
These children are immersed in the Abraham & Sarah unit of our Faith Village Sunday School for Kindergaraten through 5th graders. Experiences like these are what kids can expect every Sunday as part of the multi-sensory Workshop Rotation Model Sunday School in Faith Village. We spend 5-6 weeks with each story, encountering it through workshops such as Art, Computers, Science, Cooking, Games, Music, Drama, Movies, and more. (Here’s what we’re working on now!) This model offers a little something for every kid, lots of variety, and enough time with each lesson to really learn and understand it. We hope you’ll join us each week, but if you can’t, you’ll still feel “in the loop” because each workshop stands alone.
In Faith Village kids and adults are all on the journey of faith together! But, before we get too far down the trail, we want to make sure everyone has their bearings! The “Village Welcome Center” below gives a few “rules of the road” and a map to help you find your way through our Village! We hope you stop by the Village soon!
Top 5 “Rules of the Road”
#5 Faith Village Kids meet their Shepherd (group leader) every week in Bible Times Square (Downstairs, Room 109) for opening time together. Look for a Faith Village Welcome Team kid at the check-in desk in the downstairs foyer.
#4 After opening time, kids will follow their Shepherd to their workshop of the day. Parents and kids can check out which workshop their grade level will be attending on any Sunday by looking at the “Big Board” of information in the Fellowship Hall Foyer, at the bottom of the stairs down from the Narthex.
#3 During the first unit, Kindergarten kids will join the rest of the Faith village for opening time in Bible Times Square, and will then hold class in their own room. They will work through the same lessons, but at their own pace in their own space! Starting at the end of October, they will go through the workshops with the other Faith Villagers.
#2 Parents can pick up their kids at 11:20 at their workshop rooms. Please wait outside the workshop room for the leaders to dismiss the children. This way the kids can participate in their closing time at the end of class, free from distractions. Kids second grade and younger will be held in the workshop room until a parent or other authorized person arrives to pick them up. Please be timely, our Workshop leaders and Shepherds want to get to worship, too!
#1 And the number one rule of the the road of faith: Remember that learning about God doesn’t end when you leave the Village! The whole world is full of opportunities to worship and talk about God. Take the spirit of Faith Village home with you, and explore your relationship with God as a family. If you’re stuck for ideas, our TakeYourFaithHomepage is a great resource for ideas to keep the fun of the current rotation going between Sundays!
